POTO Will Be Used to Oppress Minorities in India

The controversial Prevention of Terrorism Ordinance (POTO) law was passed by the Indian government yesterday, but what is the use. Let's see. This law will be used to deter terrorists by putting them in jail, without being charged, for several months. This law will allow the intercept of mail and internet communication. This law will deny access to witnesses for cross examination. This law will allow the police to arrest any suspected member of groups that are defined by the government as terrorist.

Like they haven't done this before. POTO. just allows them to do what they have already been doing and feel good about themselves.

The Indian government cannot enforce the laws that are already written. It tramples on the civil rights and the human rights of its citizens whenever it feels like it. So how does it deal with the people it oppresses - oppress them more.

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that." - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Why not use the energy and resources they have and do something positive like protect the civil rights of all their citizens. How about public service campaigns on tolerance and equality for all. How about a law against hate crimes. And while they're at it, feed the hungry.
