Sikhs Return 400-Year-Old Mosque
The historic mosque is located in the Gurdaspur district, in northern Punjab. It had been looked after by Sikhs since partition in 1947, when Muslims of that area migrated to Pakistan. The Sikh caretakers were using the building as a Gurdwara with the Sri Guru Granth Sahib inside. The SGGS has been relocated to a nearby building while the mosque undergoes restoration to its original state as left by Guru Hargobind.
After a year of negotiations, a memorandum of understanding was signed by the Sikh caretakers of the building and the Punjab Waqf Board - an elected body of Muslim theologians in that district. Under the agreement, the mosque will be run by the Muslims.
''The performance of Muslim religious prayers in the mosque after 55 years would be recorded in history as an event when Sikhs showed so much magnanimity towards Muslims,'' said Dr. Haque of the Punjab Waqf Board.
