New York Sikhs Give Blood

February 16, 2003
Richmond Hill, NY

United Sikhs organized its third annual blood drive at the Makhan Shah Lubhana Sikh Center. The first blood drive was held on November 4, 2001 in dedication to the WTC victims. Sikh volunteers collaborated with the New York Blood Center which sends seven to eight workers to collect blood.

Arvinder Singh, one of the volunteers of the event, said that it takes three to four months to organize the blood drive. The New York Blood Center has strict rules and procedures to inspect the facility, the Gurdwara, and approve the event. And Sikh volunteers start to inform the sangat a month in advance to come and give blood.

Although this year the turnout was less than normal due to inclement weather, United Sikhs plan to continue the program next year. Arvinder Singh says, "We want to show the mainstream community that we are doing something good."
