LETTER Kanchandip Singh As a wheelchair user who has faced more discrimination from his own Sikh brothers and sisters then from others, I have never lost my faith or respect in Sikhism. I am happy to see that someone else has also taken the initiative to eliminate discrimination where discrimination should never have been allowed to enter our Gurudwaras. Why have the teachings of the Guru's been misinterpreted so badly? Our Guru's wanted the world to know and see how far ahead Sikhism was in relation to the other world religions. Sikhisms main tenets are that all people are equal, but our leaders in our Gurdwaras have brought in there own personal uneducated thoughts of people with disabilities not being equal to able-bodied people. If society and culture are inherently discriminatory,
where can the disabled go for solace but to the Gurudwara? But even going
to the Gurudwara has become a hassle. I wish our people would take the
necessary steps to eliminate all discrimination in the Gurudwaras. |
