By the afternoon, police had a break in the case. A forty-eight-year-old black male from Richmond, Charles Clifton Cane (spelling unknown), was arrested. A motive has not been identified. The dispatcher of Yellow Cab, Amritpal Singh, told KRON4 News online: "A man called and asked to be picked up at [an address on] 21st Street. I asked for his phone number and he said he had no phone," Singh said. "When Gurpreet got there, he told me there was no building by that address and he said he would make a round. After that, he never called again and when I called his cell phone, he didn't answer." Gurpreet Singh died inside his cab which was found with a rear wheel perched on a curb. "The victim suffered a gunshot wound to his upper torso. Officers and paramedics arriving at the scene attempted to render aid, but he died at the scene," police Capt. Lori Ritter told Contra Costa Times. Singh frequently attended the El Sobrante Gurdwara. He had been in the U.S. for five years to earn money to take back to India. He was to be reunited with his parents in October and to be married. On the surface this appears to be a hate crime, similar in circumstance to the shooting death of Balbir Singh in Arizona, September 2001. related: ©The Sikh Sentinel 2003 [Please distribute unmodified only, with credit] |
