Aryan Nations Chose Us, Why?

November 28, 2003: Arizona, USA
by Christopher Johns

Why do we love to hate?

In case you haven't heard, the Aryan Nations held a rally recently in Cave Creek.

"Arizona hit by White supremacy activities," reads a page one story.

What the story reveals between the lines is that as a community we haven't done enough. We haven't done our job to press public officials and private enterprise to make Phoenix an unattractive place for White supremacists to thrive - especially since their ideas are always accompanied by the grisly violence synonymous with raw hate.

I think we can do more to extol our deep and rich Latino roots in this community. We can do more educate ourselves and children about the diverse indigenous people - the Native American tribes - that live here.

Public officials, elected or appointed, need to emphasize issues that bind us instead of those that divide Arizonans. So far, Arizona's efforts are pallid against the hate and violence festering in our community.

The leadership that is desperately needed in our community is a vision of a multicultural Arizona. Recognizing diversity, and valuing it are two different issues. We are coming up short on value.

The Aryan Nations meeting in Cave Creek is just one of many wake-up calls to Arizona.

While we are all busy doing our own thing, the purveyors of hate are busy too.
